Ernestine's Women's Shelter, a Toronto-based organization run by women, provides support and shelter for women and children escaping violence.
We are a place of temporary refuge and support for woman and children who are escaping a range of abusive situations such as physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. 2009 marks our 26th year of providing essential services to the women and children who need us the most.
At Ernestine's Women's Shelter, we provide food, shelter and support for single women and families. We operate 32 beds in 14 bedrooms, and have trained counselling staff available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. We also offer a 24-hour emergency telephone crisis line to support those who do not currently reside at the shelter.
Ernestine's Women's Shelter recognizes the impact of violence on children and acknowledges that the rights of children are separate and distinct from their parents.
Ernestine's promotes awareness, education and advocates for early intervention and prevention.

Ernestine Affair 2010 was One of Our Most Memorable Events
Our theme for the fifteeth annual Ernestine Affair was new beginnings. Every woman who walks in the door of Ernestine's Women's Shelter is on her path to a new life free from physical and / or emotional violence.
Ernestine's Women's Shelter offers a safe place for women escaping violence to begin this new life. Through counselling and support services, women and their children begin to plan for the future, develop and enhance their life skills, and get the support they need to realize their dreams of a life free from abuse.
And this year's Ernestine Affair is in the process of a bit of a new beginning too. We have outgrown the venue that we have used for several years and moved this year to a bigger and better space. The Renaissance by the Creek (at Dundas and 427) allowed us to grow our silent auction and welcome more of our ever-expanding base of supporters and friends to the event. We also hosted it on a different night of the week - this year the Affair was held on a Wednesday evening.
We had an exciting evening! Erin Davis, of 98.1 CHFI, hosted the evening's festivities and Debra DiGiovanni, winner of Canada's Best Female Comedian at the 2009 Canadian Comedy Awards, entertained us. We had dozens of amazing silent auction items lined up, and among our live auction items was a travel voucher from West Jet worth $4000!
2010 Ernestine Affair Special Thanks
Thank-you to everyone for making this years' Ernestines Affair one of our most memorable. A special thanks to Dawn and Ed Novak who shared with us their story of losing their 21-year-old daughter to domestic violence and their fight to bring clarity and justice to situations like theirs. They have generously agreed to post their "brief" to the Minister and the Ontario justice system here.
