Ernestine's Women's Shelter

Crisis 416.746.3701 / TTY 416.746.3716

Why Volunteer?

"Love life, engage in it, give it all you've got. Love it with a passion, because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it.”
~ Maya Angelou~

Volunteers have the power to make positive changes in the world and to keep that impact going for generations. At Ernestine’s we value our volunteers and understand that they are an essential part of our fight to end violence against women and children. With volunteer time and dedication Ernestine’s is able to help our clients move forward empowered and able to live a life without violence.

How do I apply and what if I have questions?

Contact Denise Smith, the Coordinator of Volunteer Services, either by phone or by email and she will be happy to answer any questions and support you in finding which volunteer position is right for you. She will also send you an information package to get you started or you can apply online by viewing our current positions and filling out the Volunteer Application. A cover letter indicating the position applied for and why you want to volunteer with Ernestine’s and your updated resume is required.

What’s the time commitment? I can only do one day…is that possible?

Yes it is. The commitment for volunteers is 6 months but for people who want to volunteer for only one day this can sometimes be accommodated.

Do I have to come into the shelter to volunteer?

You can volunteer for Ernestine’s without coming into the shelter; this is called the Virtual Volunteer position. For example you can create a Food and/or a Pet Food Drive in your community. If you have a good rapport with your local bank, supermarket or high school you might want to start a penny drive and donate the proceeds to Ernestine’s. For more ideas or for support for your ideas contact the Coordinator of Volunteer Services.

What happens after I apply?

  1. When you find a volunteer position you are interested in send a cover letter stating the position you are applying for and why you want to volunteer for Ernestine’s, and an updated resume. This can be mailed, faxed or emailed to Denise Smith, the Coordinator of Volunteer Services.
  2. You will be contacted by the Coordinator of Volunteer Services to set up an interview.
  3. An interview is required for all positions, as well as reference checks. Please note that you are not guaranteed the volunteer position because you applied. A police check is also required when working within the Violence Against Women sector.
  4. The Volunteer Program conducts all organizational orientation/training sessions for all volunteers.
  5. All volunteers will receive orientation/training that is job specific to their duties as a volunteer within their program.
