The iconic Margaret Atwood offers a daring revision of Homer's Odyssey by giving voice to Penelope. Condemned to spend eternity in Hades, Penelope recounts her life's story and the murder of her twelve handmaidens by her vengeful husband Odysseus. Atwood's acerbic wit brings one of history's most powerful myths to the contemporary imagination. The Toronto premiere of The Penelopiad is helmed by award-winning director Kelly Thornton, Artistic Director of Nightwood Theatre, Canada's national women's theatre company.

The United Way of Toronto
The United Way of Toronto has a long history of assisting our communiy by finanically contributing to community agenices, programs and shelters. As a Member Angency we are a proud supporter of the United Way and have begun our own United Way Kick Off to celebrate. Ernestine's has participated in the Scotiabank Rat Race and we will be looking forward to the Enbride CN Tower Climb, Rouge Event and much more. For years we have held our own fundraising workplace events which have included 'Crazy Hair Day' and inner office raffles. All proceeds of money raised goes towards our fundraising target.
Each year we have depended on the generous donations from our community to assist in our raffles. Ernestine's would like to thank the following organizations for their support.
We would like to thank all our donors once again for your contributions and supporting us in reaching our target for the United Way.

The Basketeers (www.basketeers.ca)
It's hard to believe one small idea in the year 2000 to support women leaving the shelter system, would turn into the success it is today: eight Basketeers chapters in Ontario and over 3500 volunteers, supporting 39 shelters. The continued success of the Basketeers is due entirely to all the people who generously either adopt a basket or contribute to one. Ernestine's has received over 100 baskets for the women we serve since partnering with the GTA Basketeers in 2009.
"I couldn't believe how beautiful the basket was and how much thought went into the gifts. It was filled with things I really needed to start fresh in my new place. It made me feel good that a stranger could be so kind." Ernestine's client 2010
Go to the Basketeers website if you are interested in participating this year. Start early so your basket will be ready by the November deadline.
Albion Islington Square BIA (www.albionislingtonsquare.com/events-second.htm)
This BIA worked diligently to organize a number of wonderful activities for their annual awareness campaign. This year the Albion Islington Square BIA hosted the IIFA Buzz for the city of Toronto.
Their events which ran from June 1 to June 17, 2011 included:
Canadian Women’s Foundation (www.cdnwomen.org)
Ernestine’s relationship with CWF began in 2006, when for the first time staff, clients and volunteers of Ernestine’s participated in Shelter from the Storm, CWF’s national campaign dedicated to ending violence against women. This campaign raises money to support more than 400 shelters for abused women and their children across Canada. Ernestine’s is one of these shelters.
“Ernestine’s is a fine example of what a shelter should be. It is well designed and very thoughtfully laid out.” Cindy, CWF Staff
Capital One (www.capitalone.ca)
Capital One has been an important corporate donor of Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter since 2006. Capital One identified “children at risk” as an important area they wanted to support, and that has been clearly demonstrated by their ongoing funding of our Child and Youth program. Children who witness or experience violence and abuse are severely impacted by it and without proper support, are at risk of becoming withdrawn, depressed and possibly violent. .
“We can’t think of anything more important or rewarding than supporting children and women at risk of domestic violence. We are very proud of Capital One’s support! Beth, Capital One
Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville (www.toronto.intercontinental.com)
The Intercontinental Toronto Yorkville has been partnering with Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter for over four years. The staff annually raise money for the shelter through a variety of their own fundraising events – Ernestine’s Elixir , a featured patio drink that donates $1 for every one sold back to Ernestine’s.
One of our favourite parts of this partnership is the annal trip to Ernestine’s to service dinner for the women and children at the shelter. The hotel provides restaurant linen and the culinary team prepares a wonderful 3 course meal.
“The hotel, management team and staff are extremely proud of the efforts and contribution we make to Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter.” Erin, Intercontinental Hotel Toronto Yorkville
Winners (www.winners.ca)
Every summer for the past few years Winners has organized a wonderful day of summer food and fun for the women and children of Ernestine’s.
A group of volunteers from Winner’s come to Ernestine’s to cook up some fabulous food, play with the children and converse with the women and enjoy a pleasant afternoon in Ernestine’s backyard. All the activities, food and entertainment were provided by our friends at Winner’s.
In addition to the summer BBQ Winner’s provides gift cards, merchandise for seasonal clothing and Christmas. Winner’s is a wonderful friend and partner.
“It is a pleasure to be among the volunteers who come to Ernestine’s and provide a wonderful afternoon of food and fun for the women and children of Ernestine’s.” Jane, Winner’s
Woodbine Entertainment Group (www.woodbineentertainment.com)
Woodbine Entertainment Group is one of only two not-for-profit corporations that are members of Imagine Canada, a national program that promotes public and corporate giving, volunteerism and support to the community.
Ernestine’s is proud of our relationship with WEG and their generous donation of time and talent to our cause. They assist many charitable organizations and community programs with financial donations, sponsorships and in-kind contributions.
“We are proud of the contribution we make to Ernestine’s, whether it is by providing volunteers for an event, highlighting the organization at Community Day or sponsoring the Ernestine Affair, we believe in helping the women and children living at Ernestine’s to have a better, safer life.” Wendy, WEG.
In addition to these partners Ernestine’s also partners with churches, schools, unions and other organizations to raise money for Ernestine’s and help raise awareness of violence against women.
If you would like to partner with Ernestine’s please call Jill Cunnigham, 416-743-1733 x 2010 or fundraiser@ernestines.ca for more information.
