About Us

Last year at Ernestine's:

  • 89 women and 50 children received shelter;
  • 1500 calls were received on Ernestine's emergency 24-hour crisis line;
  • 87 women living in abusive situations were given support and assistance through Ernestine's Transitional Housing and Support Program;
  • 10 babies were born during their mother's stay at the shelter;
  • 76% of the children who stayed with us were under the age of 6;
  • On average, 35 women accessed our food bank every month;
  • 53% of clients required support for 2 or more legal issues through the Legal Support Program that began in June 2005;
  • 85% of women who came to the shelter found safe and affordable housing through Ernestine's Housing Program; and
  • Over 300 women and children received support through our Outreach Program.

Anne Marie Brubacher


A Board Member since 2007 and currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee.


Anne Marie is a Senior Manager within the Enterprise Risk consulting practice at Deloitte and focuses on providing governance, risk and compliance solutions to a broad range of clients. Engagement experience includes:


    (i) developing enterprise wide regulatory risk management solutions

    (ii) aligning various risk and control programs (i.e. governance, compliance, internal audit, financial controls, operational risk)

    (iii) facilitating organizational risk assessments

    (iv) reviewing organization corporate and managerial governance practices and

    (v) developing policies and procedures.


She graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1993 and received her Masters of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business in 2002. Anne Marie also recently volunteered with an international development agency to support the development of a microfinance organization in Cambodia.

Anne Marie joined EWS to contribute to the amazing work being done to support women in crisis.



Leah Andrew


A Board Member since 2007 and is the chair of the Fundraising Committee. Prior to joining the Board, Leah volunteered on the Fundraising Committee during the design of the new EWS Brand/Logo revision.


In her professional life, Leah is a small business marketing expert and entrepreneur. With 10 years of experience, Leah has an extensive marketing and community relations background, having worked with large corporate brands such as McDonald's and Shell, as well as entrepreneurial start ups, local retailers and charities. In her own business, Leah is responsible for building awareness for her local wedding classifieds site,

while also navigating the business from start up to successful growth.


Leah graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1999, and obtained her MBA at the Schulich School of Business at York University in 2004 with a specialization in Sustainable Development. In addition to Ernestines', Leah also volunteers with the Canadian Women's Foundation and their Women Moving Women campaign.



Renu Vohra-Manocha


A Board member since 2005, Renu has been actively involved on the Personnel Committee since joining the Board and has been the chair of the Personnel Committee since 2007.


Renu has over 15 years of work experience in HR. Since joining CMHC in 1998 she has held several senior positions within Human Resources, Special Initiatives, Portfolio Management and Business Development. Renu graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Science and has a CHRP from the Human Resources Professional Association.



Tara McLenaghen


A Board member since 2009 and a member of the Governance and Finance Committees.


In her professional life, Tara is an Executive Director with RiskBusiness International, a global operational risk consultancy. She has twenty five years of experience in financial services, including a variety of roles in business banking, and in operational risk with the Royal Bank. She was Vice President, Operational Risk at RBC Financial Group from 1999 to 2003, responsible for creating a Basel II compliant operational risk function. Her experience includes chairing or founding a number of industry committees in the field of operational risk.


Tara graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours Economics) in 1982, and obtained her MBA at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario in 1984. Previous volunteer experience includes serving as Secretary on the board of a Toronto Boys and Girls Club.

Mallory Smith


A Board member since 2008 and a member of the Governance Committee,


where she performs board recruitment and mentorship functions. She works in the financial sector and holds various designations related to the field. Mallory recognizes the need for social change, “I believe it is important to support organizations like Ernestine's that assist individual women escaping violence and advocates for women's rights as a whole”.



Margaret Barrie


A Board member since 2007 and has now become Co-Chair. She also is a member of the Personnel Committee.


Margaret has a Healthcare background. Her career includes many years of clinical experience as well as a long career in the Healthcare industry. Her skills include team management, business development and the creation and implementation of marketing programs.


She has co-founded and lead many associations and societies within the healthcare community. Margaret has a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and is considered a leader within her profession.



Lisette Andreyko-Peerlings


A Board Member since 2009 and Member of the Fundraising Committee.


As Business Analyst, she has directed a team responsible for the integrated software solution at CYSD, a non-profit organization in Bhubaneswar, India. Prior to her career change, she worked for 6 years at Getronics PinkRoccade (The Netherlands). She holds a Bachelor Degree in Information Management.


Lisette is a newcomer to Canada and a non-profit junkie with fundraising-volunteer positions at two other Toronto-based organizations, firmly believing newcomers, especially women newcomers, should be given equal opportunities. Lisette joined Ernestine's Women's Shelter to work, together with a fantastic team, towards ending Violence Against Women.



Stacy Nagle


joined the Board in March 2010 and is a Member of the Finance Committee.


In her professional life, Stacy is Senior Manager at Deloitte & Touche LLP in the Assurance and Advisory group, and has been with Deloitte for over 14 years. She is also the co-chair for “CanWin”, which is a People Network at Deloitte focusing on the advancement and retention of women professionals.


Stacy graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts (Administrative and Commercial Studies) in 1993. She received a Diploma in Accounting from Wilfrid Laurier University in 1995, and subsequently obtained her CA designation in 1997.


Stacy's desire to participate on the Board for Ernestine's is driven by the premise that all women and children should have a safe haven and be protected from abuse of any kind.
